John Gerard Kehoe - Irish Artist, Artist Ireland, Irish Painter, Irish Artist, Artist Ireland
John Kehoe
He became interested in the Fauves and this influenced his work in landscape painting. He painted mainly along the Grand Canal and along the banks of the Liffey at Islandbridge. At this time, Vlaninck was also a source of inspiration with his dark romantic vision and there are many paintings of Dublin and Wexford in this style.
The family moved to Oylegate, Wexford in 1976 where he started a studio and opened the Oylegate Art Gallery. Here he became interested in an expressionist technique and experimented in many techniques and styles until he found the vision he needed.
A sense of place became very important to John and he settled down after years of struggle to produce paintings he was at last happy with. Irish artists like Nathaniel Hone and Maurice McGonigal have always been important to his work. John is particularly interested in evening scenes, sunrises and sunsets in landscape. Paintings like these are a great source of meditation in this technological age. His technique varies from a loose broad brushstroke to using the palette knife in an Expressionist manner. Colour is always very important in his work and he likes a strong composition. He rarely puts figures in his landscapes, giving his pictures a feeling of loneliness.
He has shown his work for many years in the Wexford Arts Centre where a wide number of collectors and art lovers take an interest in his interpretation of Wexford. He has struggled to be true to himself and sincere towards the truth of nature and this struggle has resulted in some beautiful paintings on this journey.
